Solar thermal panels can provide up to 50% of your hot water over the course of a year and once they are installed they will provide free solar water for years to come. The savings that you will make depend on your usage of hot water and the fuel source for your boiler. If you use hot water during the day and early evening and have oil or electric heating the returns are particularly good.
A solar thermal system requires a twin coil cylinder with one coil connected to the solar panels and the second to your existing boiler. The system costs include the cost of replacing your existing cylinder
A typical domestic system would cost between £4,000 and £5,500, and you’ll be able to get £300 towards this from the Government from the Renewable Heat Premium payment scheme.
One of the best uses of solar thermal is in conjunction with a ground source heat pump as the surplus heat generation in summer can be used to recharge the ground which will have been depleted of heat in the winter.

Solar thermal systems will be covered by the Renewable Heat Incentive and are eligible for payments under the RHI Premium Payment scheme.
However, the Government has not yet published its proposals for how the RHI will work in the domestic sector so we cannot at this stage provide more information on this. We will update this site with information when we receive it.
