Backup Systems
We would hope that continuity of power supply from the grid is assured, but with 40% of the UK electricity generation coming from gas fired power stations, which are now importing some of their gas from overseas, and with a large proportion of the balance coming from nuclear, coal or imported from France, this may not always be a reality. The UK has not suffered extreme storms causing massive power disruption since 1987 and 1990, but storms on that scale could leave people without power for days if not weeks. Each time power is lost in a violent storm, a summer brownout, or other natural disaster, we are reminded of how much we depend on reliable electricity and just how vulnerable we are without it. Ardenham Energy can offer an integrated back up power system to supplement local micro power generation, this will provide autonomy from grid outages, when a local grid connected PV or wind system for safety reasons will stop operating. Normally power generated from the solar PV, wind and micro CHP would be used locally or exported back into the grid. In the event of a grid failure (or planned outage), the mains supply would be isolated and the power demand would be met from renewable sources by preference, and if the resource was running low, then battery and generator support could be activated to ensure continuity of supply.
